10 Day Marriage Challenge

I love my husband dearly, and feel blessed to have a great relationship with him. But it takes work, because loving someone doesn't exactly mean you have a healthy relationship. Can I get an amen?

I first saw this challenge on the Vanilla Tulip blog. She also plans to take a picture a day with her spouse. Unbeknownst to Bob,  we will do the same :) Won't you join us!!

Assignment: Spend an hour or so going over your nightly "Top 10".  No matter how much you think you know about each other, this process is enlightening/shocking/humbling all in one.  The way to go about this is to set a time (which could be "after the kids go to bed") and discuss your answers for an hour or so.  You can either write your answers down right before you meet or throughout the day.  But they have to be written down before the scheduled time.

Day 1- What are your Top 10 favorite characteristics about one another? Why? (wife writes 10 for her husband. And the husband will write 10 for his wife)

Day 2- What are your Top 10 favorite characteristics about yourself? Why? (Wife writes about herself. Husband writes about himself)

Day 3- Where are 10 places you have never been to but would love to go? Why? (again, these are individual lists.  You each write your own)

Day 4- What are 10 of your biggest pet peeves? Why? (in general, not necessarily with one another)

Day 5- What are your 10 things you hope your kids learn from you? Why?

Day 6- If you won $100k tomorrow... what 10 things would you buy yourself? Why? (you cannot save it or spend it on anyone else. You MUST spend it all on yourself)

Day 7- What are 10 things that you would like to improve on personally? Why?

Day 8- If you could invite 10 people to dinner, alive or dead, who would they be? Why?

Day 9- What are 10 things that your spouse can do for you, or does for you, that you really value/appreciate?

Day 10- ***Do this one over a date-night dinner***  What 10 things do y'all want to accomplish in the next year? Do this list together and once you are done talking about it and putting the list together, put it in an envelope and store it.  Then make a point to open it in a year!

Heart day

Each year Bob and I alternate who plans Valentine's Day. This year was Bob's year and he totally surprised me.

We started the day with breakfast at one of our fav coffee shop's downtown, Mildreds. Not only did we get breakfast and I drank an entire cup of HOT coffee, he arranged for nana to stay with the kids a couple of hours so we could read and chat. My tired mama soul rejoiced. After breakfast, we went home and I got a nap. A nap. Bless that man. When I woke, he told me to get ready for pedicures and dinner at Gram and Dun. Whaaaattttt. I could hardly believe it.

What makes yesterday so special is sometime last week I realized we'd spent the majority of our money for the month. There was no way we would have extra to celebrate v-day and I told him so. Instead of agreeing not to celebrate, he told me to worry not, he'd take care of the money. And he did. He used his money from Christmas that he'd been saving. Tear. I'm so grateful for him.  He saw how badly I needed a break, and to be known like that sure makes a girl feel loved.

Now, I think it's worthy to note this v-day was amazing, but we've had plenty that weren't. In fact, one year Bob was so distracted with preaching the next day, he forgot to get me a card (or anything) and spent the entire day at a coffee shop. We also rarely have extra money, which means Feb 14th is spent at home, cooking dinner, with no gift exchange. So in case you're Valentine's Day was disappointing, I understand. But know, even after an incredible v-day, we're back to real life. With screaming kids, a messy house, little sleep, long to-do's, and short tempers.

For the best of days can't bring lasting happiness or perfect moods. Only Jesus can do that.

The "D cup" just won best drink in my book. Thanks J Nato for the recommendation.
"The Jackson." I mean, grilled Romaine? Of course you were going to be incredible. Especially when paired with grilled rosemary sourdough and cranberry-orange-bourbon jam.

I also made homemade valentines with the kids. Thanks to Target's $1 section, we got a few decor items too. I'm such a sucker for this kind of stuff.

Our love story

With Valentine's Day fast approaching I thought it'd be fun to share how I met my husband.

It all began at a local coffee shop the summer of 2006.
I had a day off from camp (where I was employed for the summer) and decided to meet a friend for coffee. Bob was there studying, as usual.

At this point, Bob and I had known of each other for a couple years. In fact, family tried to set us up, but I was away at school not interested, and neither was he. When we saw each other that day in the coffee shop our hello was a bit awkward, but as our small talk continued something felt distinctly different.

A few days later I got a call from my long lost friend, Megan (married to Bob's brother). Megan was wondering if I'd like to join her and some friends at our local coffeeshop following their church's worship service. I agreed, knowing there was more behind Megan's call.

Let me stop for a moment and give a bit of background.
Somewhere in my early teens I accepted God's gracious offer to take Jesus' sacrfice as my own. As I stumbled through those years of Christian infancy I made a lot of mistakes. So many mistakes that I questioned if I ever understood what I claimed to believe. Despite my foul decision making, God continued to provide people who portrayed His radiance and love which in hindsight convinces me I was one of His all along. After I graduated high school I was drawn to Southwest Baptist University and it was there God bestowed one of His greatest gifts to me, a community of girls. These girls taught me what it is to bear up with one another, to love, and to continue the fight to know and understand our Creator. Those four years were life changing and crucial for my faith, but I still had the baggage from all those years of bad decision making. Baggage that kept me from believing God would send a godly man who'd want me as his wife.

Story resumes.

On my way to meet Megan, I fervently prayed  for God to protect my heart and actions. I felt so weak and vulnerable and knew I couldn't handle another sour situation with a "Christian" man.

After meeting Megan and attending their Sunday evening church service, we headed to the coffee shop. Bob and I sat next to each other and chatted the entire evening. On our way out the door he asked for my phone number and called me a couple days later to see if I'd be interested in a movie with himself, Jake, and Megan. I, of course, agreed and met them for the movie that weekend.

From that moment on we became inseparable. That is until I left for my senior year of college three weeks later.

Right before I left I was having a hard time with Bob and I's new friendship/relationship. All of my insecurities were rearing their ugly heads, especially the one saying I wasn't good enough to be with him. We'd also not had the infamous DTR (define the relationship), so I felt confused about what I should be feeling. The day before I headed to school Bob sat me down and basically said, " I don't play the dating game and I'm looking for a wife. If that freaks you out we should end our relationship now." I remember doing everything I could to hold back tears. This was exactly what my heart needed to hear, a man stating his intentions, because he took seriously another person's emotions.

Once I arrived at college everything moved quickly for Bob and I.
Two months into dating he left for Africa and for whatever reason I was terrified, sure he'd return wanting to break up. Much to my surprise he returned and told me he loved me for the first time.

This was THE turning point in our relationship.  We'd both agreed not to use that language until we were convinced marriage was inevitable...

Two months later he proposed.

The proposal came as a complete shock. I'd just returned from NYC with my college bestie when Bob asked me to dinner. We headed to Brio, where we had our first date, and everything felt completely normal. After dinner, Bob asked if we could stop by his house to pick up a Christmas movie before going to my parents. When we reached his house we went into his room and I immediately knew something was different. It was clean! Not just picked up clean, like spotless which I had yet see :) I also spotted a gorgeous bouquet of flowers made up of tiger lillies, one of my favorites. Shocked, I looked to him and he began a beautiful speech, followed by his proposal. With every bit of assurance, I said yes. We hugged and then he grabbed his guitar and began singing a song he had written for the occasion. The song was phenomenal.

Our engagement did not last long. Maybe 6 months. I was still in school 3 hours away and we had planned to get married the weekend after my graduation. It was nuts. Not to mention, Bob was finishing his Masters, working, and fixing up the house he'd purchased for us. I think he lost 20 lbs over the course of two months, because he worked so much and didn't make time to eat.

My mom graciously planned the majority of my wedding so I could finish school. She was a God-send. Running all the errands, attending meetings, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if she received an ulcer from it all. But the wedding ended up beautiful (see some pics here)! I mean, of course I would make changes looking back, but the majority of my changes wouldn't be decoration details as much as carving out time to pamper the wedding party. Those poor friends of ours. They stayed up late with us as we painted our house and spent hours prepping food for the reception. Absolute gems, they were.

One of the most beautiful pieces of our wedding day (and love story) is that Bob and I shared our first kiss at the altar.

It's not that we believe kissing before marriage is wrong. Waiting was just best for us. Best for me. Having the past that I do, I harbor a lot of hurt and confusion towards men. By Bob setting this standard it helped me trust his care over my heart and see how a man should honor a woman.

It was also a direct answer to prayer.

Unknowingly, my good friend Julie had begun praying for my heart and my future spouse the summer I met Bob. She prayed three specific things over me, one being that a man would show me love without physical affection. Once Bob and I became engaged Julie read me the journal entry where her prayers began. The entry was dated a week before Bob and I reconnected at the coffee shop.

I wept after Julie and I's talk.

After all the mistakes I'd made, my Lord had not only sent a man who exemplified His character, He specifically worked it out so that my heart would have time to heal and see redemption. It was as if God was reminding me, I washed you when you became mine. All of you. Your past has no weight anymore. You are free.

It still brings me to tears thinking about it.

And after almost 6 years of marriage, I'm still in awe of the man God brought me. Of course, we have our moments of frustrations, our fights (one was last night if I'm honest), and hurts from sinning against one another. But that's the beauty of our continued story of redemption. God isn't done with Bob and I and we get to walk alongside each other as our Creator molds us into people who are more like Him. People who are learning to unselfishly serve others, forgive when it seems impossible, and care about unjust acts taking place in our world.

I consider it an honor to be this man's wife and more than that I marvel at the work of my Savior.

Wedding!!

One of the sweetest people I know got married on Friday. The wedding was beautiful, she was stunning, and her boys looked adorable. I couldn't be happier for her and her little family!

The below pictures are from Ashley's rehearsal breakfast. We had a blast and Braydon couldn't get enough of his friends.

Sarah (another good friend), Ashley, and I were pregnant at the same time with these crazies- delivery
dates within two months of each other. Such a joy watching them grow into healthy three year olds!

Notice the metallic nails. It's my attempt to be trendy.
Essie- Nothing Else Metals

Below are pictures from Ash's reception. She had twelve types of cupcakes. TWELVE!
Sister knows how to throw a party.

And in case you're wondering, I had four. It only seemed right.

Weddings are one of my favorite events to attend.  I love seeing people partake in a timeless tradition and observing all the fun, girly details. My absolute favorite thing is sitting next to Bob and remembering our special day. Our wedding was by no means perfect and there are details and styles I'd absolutely change, but I would NEVER change the man that was by my side or the people who shared in our special day.

For fun, here are a few pictures from our wedding.

Amazing what a little hair and makeup can do :)

Learn me hard, Learn me right (Part 2)

Yes, my title was taken from Mumford and Sons and yes, their new album has been playing nonstop in my house. It's glorious. Just glorious.

Here are the remaining notes from the marriage conference.

Enjoy!

Paul David Tripp- "What did you expect?"
Marriage, this side of heaven, is always a war between two kingdoms- kingdom of self and kingdom of God.
-       Treasures:
Everyone lives for some kind of treasure
Your treasure will control your heart
What controls your heart will control your behavior
Most treasures are assigned value; they’re not intrinsically valuable.
This side of eternity it is very hard to keep what is important, important
Your marriage will always be enhanced by or victimized by what you treasure
A good desire becomes bad when it becomes a ruling factor.
Most men have built their treasure at work and they drive home and punch out because home is outside of their treasure circle.
Earthbound treasure has no capacity to satisfy your heart.
Neglect will lead to catastrophic outcomes
Anxiety bound needs
Once you feel entitled to a need you see love as someone’s willingness to fulfill that need
Jesus says your heavenly Father knows and will deliver.
You don’t need a loving husband. You have all you need at the foot of the cross.
Which of the two kingdoms shape your marriage?
Don’t live in the nasty little kingdom called self.
Two lifestyles- Manipulation v. Ministry
Selfishness will cause you to desire things you shouldn’t. To indulge is to feed and desperately want to feed your kingdom.
God knew how deep our sin would go so he unzipped us and stepped inside (Holy Spirit).
The lifestyle of our selfishness is manipulation
The degree of your happiness is not a good read on the successfulness of your marriage.
Only people who have God in his rightful place can love people as they should
The majority of marital problems is that we don’t love God enough
You fix marriage vertically first.
What does real love look like?
Love is willing self sacrifice for the good of another that does not demand reciprocation or that the person being loved is deserving.
Love is a sacrifice. Without this you don’t love.
Do you scan one another’s lives to see the areas they need God’s care.
Love is motivated and engaged when the other doesn’t deserve it
Love is best born out of gratitude- we can say, regardless of our circumstances, we will love because “God first loved us.”
If we forget the magnificence of God’s love for us then we will easily sin in our marriage.
God’s purpose for me, my purpose in my marriage, is to seek the kingdom
Think on the things you take for granted and thank your spouse
Together we need to have a heart that cries “Your Kingdom Come.”
Worship God as the Creator
You’ll never be able to love the person if you’re trying to recreate them.
Worship God’s sovereignty: Your story
Acts 17- God determines the details of your life
Critiquing is disheartening and disrespectful
Worship God’s sovereignty: God as Savior- Your growth in grace
You will experience your sin and grace in marriage
You want your heart exposed- get married
The hope of marriage is Emmanuel- God with us
Our marriage needs to be invaded by grace

Learn me hard, Learn me right (Part 1)

Marriage.
I'll admit it. I didn't have a clue what that mean't at the time I committed to it. I thought I did. I thought I was signing onto something that would provide endless conversation, amazing sex, romantic vacations, financial security, and some cute, healthy babies.

But it hasn't been about those things. Not entirely.

I think if we're all honest, those of us who are married, would admit that we battle a lot of disappointment and hurt, because our marriages are not all we dreamed they'd be. Am I right?
This has to stem from a severe misunderstanding and expectation that, when broken down, equates to us expecting to marry a slave of a human who's entire existence is to make us happy. Which is not realistic, despite what romantic comedy's tell us.

After 5 years of marriage, I'm realizing that it's actually really good news that my marriage is not about me. Because, if left to my rule I would squander those who mean the most and never truly know what it is to love. I'm that selfish.

So, thank you Jesus. Thank you for saving me from myself and giving me a fighting chance to know what it is to love something other than the sound of my own voice.

A huge thank you is also due to Paul David Tripp for so eloquently teaching us more about this subject of expectations and selfishness within marriage. He is nothing short of amazing and all of you should read his material. http://www.paultrippministries.com/ We've both read, 'Instruments in the Hands of a Redeemer' (well, I'm still reading it b/c I read as if I'm half blind) and we highly recommend it.

So without further ado, here are bits from Tripp's marriage conference.
I pray that even though these are my notes, which means you're getting incomplete thoughts and little background, you obtain healing to your wounds and Truth for your heart.

*Tripp also sells a DVD of the marriage conference, should you be interested in hearing the whole thing.

* I will also post the second portion of notes tomorrow morning. I didn't want to overload you :)

Marriage Conference- "So what did you expect?"

We don’t live in big moments
-if God doesn’t rule the mundane then there’s no hope.
-The character of a marriage is made up of 10,000 little moments

The cross humiliated our righteousness which should free us to be honest; we should be the most honest community on earth

A Marriage of unity, understanding, and love is not rooted in romance, but in worship
Romance is not a cause but a result
Worship is your identity before an activity
Heart= casual core of personhood. Whatever is in control of your heart controls your direction
There’s an organic connection between root and fruit. A good root produces good fruit.
Not good ways to deal with marriage
Threat- scare them into change
Manipulation
Guilt
These are ways we try to achieve change- we’re incapable of causing change. Change is always a work of divine grace.
Don’t apple nail- Nail good apples to a dying tree.
Your behaviors are formed by what’s inside you. What’s outside is never the cause of actions otherwise everyone would always react the same way.
Implications from Luke 6:43-45, Romans 1:25
All marriage problems are heart problems
Lasting change always travels through the pathway of the heart
I am my biggest problem
This confession is the doorway to change; will also be the dominant, long-term difficulty.
Sin causes us to shrink our lives to the size of our lives
The created world cannot offer spiritual refuge
God is drawing commitment out of us through tough times
The hardship of this world has become a dirty secret in our community
The hope of your marriage is Jesus. He does the one thing we can’t do for ourselves- deliver us from ourselves.
We create a kingdom so small there’s only room for one person’s desires, emotions, etc.
I Want” is how we run our lives- we were never meant to live this way.
The DNA of sin is selfishness. As long as sin is in me selfishness will be there.
Sin is antisocial in form. We were mean’t to live outward and upward lives.
We carry around in ourselves something that is destructive to relationships.
Sin will cause you to dehumanize people. They become obstacles and subjects of emotions
Envy is rooted in selfishness.
It will never be about you, because we’ve been born into a world that was made to celebrate another. When we make it about us it leave us hurt, discontent, and in envy.
Picking each other a part is relational insanity
-       Sin still lives in us so we must embrace the hope in the passage (2 Cor 5:14-15). We need to accept his rescue.
Jesus shed his blood to rescue us from ourselves
